Music was in the air once again at the annual Music festival at Splashy Fen over the Easter weekend. Among the many performers there, Felixton’s David Jenkins was present, performing with his “Ballie Band”. David arrived at Splashy on 1 April, with trepidation and anxiety, the foremost emotions at play. Friday began with a practice ‘Jam session’; the players of which consisted of the drummer – Mark Pitcher; David’s uncle, Ant Jenkins – Guitar, harmonica and backing vocals; John Bosse – the bassist from Pan Latino (a band mixing South American and African music influences); Kech Sanchez – Pan Latino band leader, on percussion and woodwind instruments as well as David himself – main vocals, guitar, banjo and concertina.
The band performed on Splashy’s main stage (The Grant Erskine Stage), which David described as exhilarating. The crowd was stunned by David’s fusion of Bluegrass banjo and Maskandi/African compositions. It was the largest Splashy in years by many accounts; also notably one of the driest. This was David’s debut performance; one which he not only thoroughly enjoyed, but which garnered him no small amount of fame.
On Saturday David was to be found in Durban recording an album through prominent Maskandi Group, Shabalala Rhythm’s record company. The recording itself is still being edited, and David hopes that we will see it on shelves in the near future!
We wish David a successful and lucrative career in the Music industry.
