By Ali Taqvi, Grade 7.
It has been called the year of action! Great power has been bestowed upon South Africa.
But!!! Are we ready for the 2010 World Cup?
There are many aspects we must review in order to find our answer. Let’s begin with the biggest issue: crime. The police have promised to deploy 41 000 policemen during the World Cup. The South African National Defence Force has said that it will help in any way possible.
Nine stadiums have been built; three of them are in Gauteng.
More than 5 000 hotels are offering accommodation to visiting tourists and players. For those of you who don’t think that many people will come to South Africa, you’re wrong! More than 2 000 000 tickets have been sold and 500 000 people from South Africa have registered to buy tickets.
We all know that South Africa suffers from major traffic levels, so during the World Cup, to reduce these levels, the schools will be closed. This will lower the traffic levels by 50%.
Combine all these aspects and we have the ingredients for an amazing, unforgettable World Cup!
Before I finish off, I want to tell you that 87% of the people in our country think that we are ready and that the World Cup will be a success. 13% on the other hand, think that we are not ready – rotten apples!!
To conclude, I would like to say that YES, I think S.A. is ready for the World Cup!
