Time-table free day

An exciting new approach to time-tabling for project work is set to see Felixton Primary School children earning First Aid certificates, learning to sail and so much more.

Class teachers have the advantage that they can spend more time on a certain area one week and 'pay it back' another. Subject teachers, however, tend only to be able to spend 80 minutes, at the most, on a lesson. This prevents many subject teachers from being able to start something and see it through to completion without packing away until the next day.

For this reason we have one time-table free day per term. On this day a class spends the whole day on one subject. The subject may be a school-based Learning Area or may be an extra-curricula skill. A class may go rock climbing and bird spotting while another class may spend the entire day covering a section of English or doing Maths extension.

These days form a vital part of teaching and learning. They are fun, different, challenging and aimed at extending the children out of their comfort zones.
