Senior Primary Phase (Grade 4 - 7)

Assessment

  • Continuous assessment throughout the year in the form of class tests, projects, presentations, group work and formal assessments.

  • Grades 6 and 7 write exams at the end of the second and fourth term and tests at the end of the first and third term.

  • Grade 4 and 5 do not write exams, but rather are assessed in each subject every term.

External Examinations

  • Grade 6 writes the IEB Core Skills Test at the beginning of the Third Term every year. These results are not released to the learners. The detailed breakdown of results we receive from the IEB is used for planning and benchmarking purposes.

  • Every child from Grade 4 – 7 writes the AMESA Maths Challenge in August and a few children in every grade manage to meet the standard to write the final round held in October.

  • Every child from Grade 4 – 7 writes the National Natural Science Olympiad.

Cultural activities

Chess club is offered most afternoons.

We have a cultural period every Friday during which time children participate in an activity of their choice for the term. The activities change from term to term, but are generally along the lines of the following:

  • Chess

  • knitting

  • paper mache

  • scrabble

  • games of logic

  • calligraphy

  • current affairs

  • public speaking

Every second year we participate in the Zululand Eisteddfod. Every class presents a choral verse and some individual items. Art pieces are also submitted for exhibition.

Every other year we have an Arts Festival. During this festival we spend two days participating in Dance, visual arts and crafts, music and cultural activities. Some workshops are hosted by visitors while others are organised by parents and staff of Felixton College.

During the Arts Festival years we produce a Senior Primary Production. Ideally every child is involved in some aspect of the play.

Subjects – we supplement the subjects prescribed by the Department of Education in the following ways:

  • Computer Education – MSWord, Excel, Powerpoint, Logo, 'Readers are Leaders', 'Cami Maths'. Each child has his/her own user name and password.

  • Timetable free days – once a term we have a timetable free day. On this day every Senior Primary class spends the entire school day on one subject or theme. During 2009 classes spent the day at the UniZul Science Centre or Learning to Sail at the Zululand Yacht club, learning about Medieval and Shakespearian English, 'Growing up' with a visiting Beautician and motivational speaker, planning their market day, doing arts and cratfs based on their class novel etc. etc. These days are wonderful and allow for indepth exploration of a theme that may, or may not, be part of the curriculum.

Sport – the following are offered on a rotational basis throughout the year.

  • Social Squash

  • Tennis

  • Golf

  • Cricket – Boys and Girls

  • Swimming

  • Hockey – Boys and Girls

  • Rugby

  • Cross Country

  • Netball

  • Athletics

  • Sailing
