FROM THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

Dear Parents, Boys and Girls

While pondering on what to write this week, I thought back to my days as a little chap sitting in a little desk, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed hanging on each word the teacher said.

Like you and me, there are little souls out there who have very high expectations of the year ahead and we dare not let them down.

Perhaps this is an opportune time to honour our teachers and the work they do – behind the scenes, in the classroom, on the sport field and on the playground.  They help and console your children when they are hurt, or feeling sad.  They praise your child when he/she conquers fear.  They open your child’s eyes to all the wonders of learning and encourage him or her to become the very best that they can be.

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Susan. Be honest. What do you make?"

Susan, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make?

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
I make a C+ feel like the winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute silence.

"You want to know what I make?"

*     I make kids wonder.
*     I make them question.
*     I make them criticize.
*     I make them apologize and mean it.
*     I make them write.
*     I make them read, read, read.

I make them show all their work in math and perfect their final drafts in English. I make them understand that if you have the brains, and follow your heart, and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you must pay no attention because they just didn't learn." Susan paused and then continued. "You want to know what I make? 'I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.'  What do you make?"

And finally, to all our mums out there - I hope you were thoroughly spoilt last Sunday.

FROM THE PREP DESK

Dear Parents, Boys and Girls

It was wonderful to see our young charges ‘giving it their all’ on the rugby field, the hockey field and the netball courts on Friday and Saturday last week.  Not all games were won, but the games were contested in a fair and sporting manner, and each individual tried their very best.  Well done, and thank you to all the coaches for giving up their time over the weekend.

We are now well and truly into our extra mural timetable.  Netball, hockey and rugby are our major sports codes this term.  Please note that we have a policy of maximum participation.  Each pupil that attends practices will be given the opportunity to represent Felixton in a match/matches.  Please use this opportunity to support your children as they ‘give it their all’ on the sports fields and netball courts.

Congratulations to RUBEN KOK and LAURA HUNT on their appointments as Head Boy and Head Girl of the Prep School for 2010.

And finally, on the lighter side of life, I have included a list of traits of girls and boys taken from Dr. James Dobsen’s book “Bringing up Boys”.  Don’t you love the spontaneity and creativity of children.  Here boys and girls come up with a list of characteristics pertaining to themselves and members of the opposite sex.

“GIRLS ARE MORE BETTER THAN BOYS”

• Girls chew with their mouths closed
• Girls are more kinder to animals
• Girls walk more politely
• Girls can do their hair better
• Girls don’t pick their nose
• Girls don’t eat as much
• Girls like to get more tan
• Girls look better than boys
• Girls have more manners
• Girls put on deodorant more often

“WHY BOYS ARE MORE BETTER THAN GIRLS”

• Boys can sit in front of a scary movie and not close their eyes once
• Boys were created first
• Boys learn to make funny noises with their armpits faster
• Boys don’t do all those wiggly movements when they walk
• Boys don’t waste their life at the Mall
• Boys don’t braid another’s hair
• Boys can hang onto their stomachs on fast rides
• Boys don’t worry about ‘diet this’ and ‘diet that’
• Boys don’t cry and feel sorry when they kill a fly
• Boys are proud of their odour

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends
                                                    of them - Abraham Lincoln

FROM THE PREP DESK

Dear Parents, Boys and Girls

I strongly believe that schools are not just about academic education.  This is not what makes the world go round; other qualities such as social and practical skills are essential for sane living and for getting ahead in today’s world.  Values such as integrity, generosity, courtesy, compassion and understanding the place of spirituality are of primary importance to our children leading fulfilled and ultimately successful lives as human-beings.  I believe in a curriculum that offers holistic development that is varied and exciting, and that creates learning opportunities for each and every individual within the school.

Having said this, I feel it is important, both as teachers and parents to encourage our children to become involved as fully as possible in the life of Felixton College.  This includes both the academic, cultural, sporting and social spheres.  By doing so and by using all the opportunities available to them, I believe our children will continue on the road to becoming happy, confident children able to handle all situations life may throw at them.

Robert Fulghum believes that all you need to know about how to live and what to do, you learn at Kindergarten.  These are the things he learned:

• Share everything.
• Play fair.
• Don’t hit people.
• Put things back where you found them.
• Clean up your mess.
• Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
• Say you’re sorry when you hurt someone.
• Wash your hands before you eat.
• Flush.
• Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
• Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.
• Take a nap every afternoon.
• When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
• Be aware or wonder.  Remember the little seed in the styrofoam cup.  The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
• Goldfish and hamsters and mice and even the little seed in the styrofoam cup – they all die.  So do we.

It is in this vein that I reiterate the need for each child to become fully involved in all Felixton College has to offer.

And finally, congratulations to all who helped make the Rugby Festival such a success.  It was wonderful to meet new people and see new faces.
CRAIG McILRATH

PREP SCHOOL BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK

Happy birthday to: Leesan Moodley – Grade 1 – 2/5/2010

ACHIEVEMENTS........JORDAN GRAVEN (Grade 6) wins a trophy for "Junior's biggest fish of the year 2009"at Meerensee Boat Club.  He caught a 16.9 kg Giant Kingfish, off Richards Bay with a small flick stick using a Daiwa Excella 3500 reel.

TWINSTREAMS TOUR – GRADE 6 AND 7
We had great fun on our tour with many laughs.  Some of our activities were an obstacle course where our teamwork and logic came to good use.  On the second day we had a 12km walk.  6km to the lagoon where we had lunch, played a game to make a picture of the impact on the environment and then went canoeing and mudbaths where we learned about the mangrove trees and their differences and all the crabs living there.  Then we walked back to camp.  At night our teachers gave us interesting games to play like 30 seconds.  Lots of fun was had and I think we all want to go back again soon!
Laura Hunt – Grade 7

Twinstreams was so much fun.  The food was lovely and activities challenging.  We had two guides and two groups.  I was in the Tigers with Junior and the others were in the Monkeys with Sakie.  Junior loved to give us motivational speeches and Sakie loved to blow his pink whistle.  If I must say myself… the food was better than home!  We walked 7km on the beach to get to the lagoon and the mangroves.  We went canoeing and swam in the mud with crabs and snails.  Then we walked 7km back again.  When we got back we had a shower and played games until 21:00.  The next morning was good-bye.  We all shouted thank you.  The previous night we made cards for them.  It was so sad to say good-bye, but we had to, so we left.
Michelle Hammar – Grade 7

MEASLES ALERT
Please be advised that there are 2 cases of measles in the community.  You need to consult your doctor/clinic if you have any concerns and remember that your child will be requested to stay away from school, as measles is highly contagious, only to return once the doctor has given his blessing.

PREP SPORTS RESULTS

U12  Jade Dicks, Robyn Swift, Matthew Leslie, Euan Keeley (reserve)
U13  Micayla Prozesky, Ruben Kok, Damon Welsh, Jordan Graven, Michael Dalais, Sheldon Getkate

Well done, boys and girls!

HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

LITTER BUGS
The Grade 11 Life Science and Geography groups picked up litter along the sides of the road for 1 km along the Western bypass of Empangeni, on Thursday 22 April.  The rationale behind the exercise was to monitor the effect of litter thrown out of vehicles in a non-urban area.  75 black refuse bags were filled by the hard-working group.  This amounted to 120 kgs of roadside litter, mainly in the form of tin cans and bottles.  Hopefully we would have made an impact on some of the people using the road.  It was worth it; even if one person learnt from it!

FELIXTON COLLEGE RUGBY FESTIVAL
Thank you to all who participated in and assisted with the 4th Felixton College Rugby Festival we hosted over the long weekend.  10 schools participated in this event and the organisation involved in feeding, laundering rugby jerseys, transporting, making up goodie bags, sleeping and chaperoning 250 players/coaches, is a massive undertaking.  All this was executed with the usual Felixton College flair and “attention-to-detail”, which was reflected in the feedback forms we received from the other coaches: Martin Miller (Howick High School) “You have a great school – lovely to see such a wonderful TEAM effort!!!! Great to see a “Gelled” Staff. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived”.
Mr Schutte (St Peters, Johannesburg) “Very worthwhile exercise and great organisation.  Would love to come back next year!”.

Our Felixton boys played their hearts out and gained wonderful experience from the festival.  Many times they play against schools with 4 or 5 times the number of boys in their schools and yet we continue to put up a fight.  We would like to wish David Raphael, our 1st team 8th man, a speedy recovery from the shoulder surgery he underwent at The Bay last week.

All senior primary teachers will be on hand, including Mrs. Zuma, our Zulu teacher, who will be available on the Tuesday afternoon.

GRADE 4 AND 5 TOUR
The Grade 4 and 5 learners went to Stewart’s Farm during the last week of last term.  The children visited a Zulu Cultural Village where they learnt Zulu dancing, tasted Zulu beer, made zulu spears and designed beaded necklaces.
We visited local informal farms and learnt the importance that it plays in the life of the Zulus.  The children went on a tough 5km hike around Stewarts farm and enjoyed interacting with their environment.  The girls and boys were well-behaved and enjoyed learning more about the Zulu culture.

My favourite moment at Stewart’s farm was……

When we went to the Cultural village and we had a Zulu dancing competition.  Sarah and I won!   Nombuyiselo Mdluli – Gr 5

When we played idols and we came second.  I really enjoyed myself.  Kumeshan Bhudu – Gr 5

When we played Stalk the Lantern and when we ate ice-cream! – Deveshni Naidoo – Gr 5

When we threw knobkerries at a wooden buck.  I hit the buck on the head!  -  Tim Shepherd – Gr 5

During the team building exercise and playing with the dog.  I still miss the dog!  -  Dwane Hayes – Gr 5

When we ate grapefruit in the orchard. – Jason Loosemore – Gr 5

When we went on a hike and made Zulu spears. – Tumi Ntheledi – Gr 4

The food, the activities and the cabins we slept in. – Dylan Palavar – Gr 4

When I got to dance and drink Zulu beer at the cultural village.  -  Sthelo Kubheka – Gr 4

Sleeping in the cabin because it felt like my own home. – Chris Prinsloo – Gr 4

The team building because we had to swim! – Ntando  Mthuli -   Gr 4
Photos will be posted on http://www.felixtoncollege.co.za/ by the end of this week.

SPORT RESULTS

Treverton Sports Tour : 6 – 10 April 2010

On Tuesday 6 April 2010. the first Rugby and Boys’ and Girls’ Hockey teams went to Treverton in Mooi River, to attend their annual sports festival.  All three of our teams performed exceptionally well against schools from all over South Africa and Zimbabwe.  Most of the schools that attended the Festival were over 1000 scholars in size and our teams competed wonderfully!

Boys’ Hockey
The boys’ hockey team had a very successful Festival; performing very well in their matches. Jason Pennefather, Wandile Tshabalala and Xabiso Lupuwana are but a few of the players that stood out.  This is a very young team and the experience gained at this Festival will help these boys to develop into a formidable unit.

1st XV  Rugby
The team had very tough fixtures against three large schools.   We have become used to our rugby team giving everything, and yet again they did not disappoint.

Results:
Felixton 18 – Sutherland (Pretoria) 14
Felixton 19 – St. Dunstans (Benoni) 0
Felixton 12 – Heronbridge (Johannesburg) 20

It is very hard to single out players, because the whole team played extremely well.  The Festival organizers did, however, notice Clinton Steenkamp and Trevor Kietzmann.

After a long week of very competitive sport, it was the Felixton spirit that stood out above everything.  Our manners, determination, guts, passion, sportsmanship and support for one another made me realize yet again what a special school Felixton College is.

Thank you very much to Mr. Angus Thomson, Mrs. Wickham, Miss van de Venter and Mr. Mthethwa for going on tour with us and for supporting me on tour.  Thank you to Barry and Debbie Lane for being there for us during the week.  Thanks also to the parents that supported us during our time at Treverton.

Well done to all the players - you made the Felixton College community very proud!

1st Team Netball Tour to the South Coast by Cyan Patterson (Captain)
On 7th April the 1st Netball girls and coach, Ms Simenson, left for the South Coast to be hosted by Margate Sports School and South Coast Academy.  Eager to excel and ready for anything, the girls participated in a four-day coaching clinic and a mini-tournament of practice matches.  With a player short and 3 injuries with which to contend, training was tough, but the girls excelled, coming first in many of the individual player evaluations.  Congratulations to Vice-Captain, Lindo Madonsela, who was chosen by various umpires as one of the top-ten players of the week.  The girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and also spent some free time at the beach, the cinema and cliff-diving!  Thank you to Ms Simenson and Ms Ncube (assistant coach) for an awesome tour.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ……Cyan Patterson, who was selected for U21 Zululand Netball and Lindo Madonsela, who was selected for U19 Zululand Netball. We are so proud of you ladies!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:  A diplomatic teacher sent this note home to all parents: "If you promise not to believe everything your child says happens at school, I'll promise not to believe everything he says happens at home"

BASS FISHING CHALLENGE – Please read
Organisers have decided to go ahead with the fishing competition this weekend, but I do believe it necessary to point out that we have received numerous warnings of increased crocodile activity at the Reding dam.  According to people who have fished there recently, these crocodiles have become accustomed to human activity and are not easily scared off.  There are also hippos in the dam.  Crocodiles and hippos are wild animals and need to be respected as such.

Felixton College has decided not to withdraw from the competition en masse.  Individual parents need to give participation their serious consideration and decide based on the age and experience of their children.

Children should be advised to fish from a boat or the back of a bakkie, rather than standing close to the water.  Participation is not advisable for young children or those unaccustomed to fishing in the proximity of crocodiles.

The following extract is taken from www.stluciasouthafrica.co.za/crocodiles

Here are a few important facts to remember when venturing down to the estuary :

* Always keep a safe distance of 5m from the waters edge.
* A crocodile can propel himself out of the water as far as two thirds of his body length.
* A crocodile can swim at a speed of 35 km/h.
* A crocodile can run 7 km/h over a short distance.
* Crocodiles are more active during the summer than winter.
* Crocodiles feed mainly at night.
* An old crocodile looks for easy prey and what is easier, hunting   for fish or people in or near the estuary.
* Do not leave children unattended!
* Always be alert when walking/fishing at the estuary.
Happy fishing, and PLEASE do take care.
