THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: I am one, but still I am one.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something.  I will not refuse to do something I can do.  Helen Keller

SOMETHING FISHY? NO, SHEER BRAINPOWER!
The recent Maths Quiz for Grade 8 and 9 learners was a great success and above all, a lot of fun.  The Fish Team, comprising the Fish Family and Grade 9 learner, Este Louw, emerged the winners.

THE WINNING TEAM - Jessica Fish, Este Louw, Karen, Derek and Tammy Fish

THANK YOU LETTER FROM A PARENT
On January 27th Toni and I were involved in an accident on our way to Felixton College during very wet weather. Our vehicle aqua planed, spun out of control, rolled several times and ended up facing back towards Empangeni.
Thankfully neither of us was obviously physically injured beyond whiplash and mild concussion. Of course Toni was in deep shock and continues to receive post trauma treatment.
What amazed me at the time was that three people immediately stopped to assist us. All were parents from Felixton College. Their kindness, sympathy and general help was overwhelming. One parent called a tow truck, one called the school and one simply held us and prayed with us.
Once again it was brought home to me how amazingly supportive and strong the Felixton family is. The magic of Felixton College has always been the personal touch.
Heartfelt thanks from Toni and I to those parents who gave so freely of their time and resources to ensure that we were cared for at a time of extreme trauma. I cannot over emphasise how comforting it was to have them around and in control at that time. I never got their numbers and would appreciate it if you would thank them on our behalf through the Felixton Weekly Newsletter.

Yvette and Toni Canham.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:  Sandwich every bit of criticism between two thick layers
of praise - Mary Kay Ash

HEADMASTER PRAISES CRICKETERS
Mr Krige praised the cricketers who represented the College at cricket against Grantleigh last week.  Not only did we win 7 out of 9 A-side matches (see the results below), our learners displayed wonderful sportmanship, spirit and manners on and off the field.  Thank you to our parents who ensured that their children were properly kitted out and were good advertisements for our school.
Felixton College is fast establishing itself as one of, if not THE, cricketing school in Zululand.

TOUCH RUGBY TOURNAMENT
It's the start of the rugby season, with the 6 Nations kicking off and the Super 14 soon to follow.  With this exciting flow of rugby in mind, we have decided to host our own TOUCH RUGBY TOURNAMENT on Friday 19 February at the Dickson Oval. The proceeds of this tournament will go towards the High School netball, hockey and rugby teams who will be travelling to Treverton for a week of sport in April.
This epic clash  needs your support! Delicious food will be on sale and you can be a part of the Fun Felixton Vibe.
Each team needs: a name, a captain, 10 players (including 1 Grade 8, 1 Grade 9 and at least 1 adult), a t-shirt colour and a fee of R10.00 per player to enter. Junior School teams are most welcome to enter
Each game will last 10 minutes and there is a good chance that the winners may face the Colossal Felixton College Staff Team as well.
Entry forms are available from the Sports Office and can be handed in (together with your money) to the Marketing Department before Tuesday 16 March.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Train up a child in the way he should go - and walk there
yourself once in a while (Josh Billings)

MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

We all seem to have hit the ground running as 2010 as got off to a flying start.  2009 ended well with our Matric class achieving some of Felixton’s best results yet.  On the downside we had out first candidate not qualifying, a candidate who passed all other subjects comfortably but fell 3% short in English after an uncharacteristically bad exam day; a sombre reminder of the importance of each individual exam.  On the up-side we had 27 subject ‘A’s’ and 54 B’s, from only 33 candidates.  This is a total of 81 results above 70%, up from 64 the previous year.  We also had 20 candidates qualify for entrance into a Bachelor’s Degree and a further 11 qualify for entrance into a Diploma.  Well done to the Class of 2009 and out best wishes to the Class of 2010 which promises to achieve the best IEB results yet from any school in Zululand.

I need to express my sincere apologies for the terrible state of our pool.  I am certainly no pool expert but am learning on a daily basis.  After much testing and expenditure of effort and chemicals over the past few weeks we have been advised by a local pool company that the water in the pool is unusable.  Apparently this tends to happen in large pools after a number of years.  The high level of “Total Dissolved Solids” is rendering any chemical treatment ineffective.  Dissolved solids cannot be filtered out so the only solution is to discard the water and refill the pool.  This will be done as soon as possible so that swimming lessons can resume.  We do apologise for this unacceptable disruption of our sporting programme.

A number of parents have asked why we have compulsory Saturday schooling on our calendar this year.  Saturday schooling has never been our policy at Felixton and it is certainly not our intention to introduce it.  However, 2010 is a extraordinary year and we all have to break from normal policy and make sacrifices to host the wonderful spectacle which is the World Cup.  All schools have been asked to take a 5-week mid-year holiday, also a break from normal policy.  When we decided on our calendar for 2010, we did out best with the given constraints to protect as much family time as possible while securing adequate academic time during the year.  Two days of Saturday school were the best solution we arrived at.  I would like to assure you that this will not be the norm and that 2011 will be business as usual again as far as the calendar is concerned.

K.S. KRIGE
HEADMASTER

WELCOME TO.........Miss Lyndsay Collocott, who joined us as a Senior Primary Intern this term.  Lyndsay matriculated from Creston College and has a Batchelor of Social Science Degree from the University of KZN Maritzburg with honours in Psychology.
................Mr Walter van Rooyen is no stranger to most of us as he was in the Felixton College Class of 2009 and has returned as a Gap Student.  Walter's main area of focus will be the Computer Centre and he will be coaching sport as well.
SWIMMING
Last week Felixton College hosted a social gala at Empangeni Town Pool.  St Catherine's, Holy Childhood, Grantham Park and Mtunzini all joined us in a wonderful afternoon's swimming.  Our swimmers swam very well and we were delighted to secure a few first places.  The following swimmers all achieved a first place; Bradley McNally, Tristan Fernandes, Damon Welsh and Ruben Kok.

GET-TO-KNOW-YOUR-GRADE CRICKET.....
Thank you to all those who attended the first family event of the year last Friday. Nothing could prevent us from having fun - not the swarm of bees that attacked 2 of our teams or the scary lightening that eventually made us call off the event! Pictured below is Grade 10 learner, David Raphael, who was hailed as the hero of the evening when he shielded Khetan Chetty (Grade 4) from the bees, picked him up and ran with him to safety.  He then proceeded to remove all the stings from Khetan, not telling us that he had borne the brunt of the stings himself. On Monday morning, Khetan went in search of his hero and presented him with a "thank you".

Top NOTES TO JUNIOR SCHOOL PARENTS

Dear Parents

Eisteddfod 2010
Felixton College Primary School will continue to support the eisteddfod in 2010.  We believe it is a good platform for our learners to perform their talents.  Each class will perform a choral verse, choir items may be presented and we will submit individual visual art pieces done in class.  Children will be transported to the different venues to perform those items involving the entire class or choir.

However, all individual pieces and small groups will be given time off school to perform but practices and transport will be the responsibility of parents.  It is very time consuming and disruptive when teachers are responsible for sourcing, practising and arranging transport for individual items, often at the expense of the children who have chosen not to participate.

We will endeavour to keep you informed of closing dates and performance dates via the newsletter and web page.

Grade 4 – 7 ‘Meet-the-Teachers’ – Thursday 28 January 201
‘Meet-the-Teachers’ on Thursday afternoon from 14:30 – 16:00 will begin in the Hall with a brief address by Mr. Krige, followed by some housekeeping issues from Mrs. Krige.  Parents will then have the opportunity to go to their child’s classroom where the class teacher will advise them on her expectations for the year, class routines and answer any general questions that parents may have.

We request all parents attend, not just new parents, as it is an opportunity for new ideas to be addressed as well as plans for the year to be unfolded.  The renovated computer centre with 25 new flat screen machines will be open for your interest.

Grade 4 – 7 teachers look forward to meeting you all on Thursday afternoon.

The KZN Pony Club has selected 8 riders from all over KZN and Clive is the only rider from the Zululand Pony Club to be selected.  He will not be able to take his horse with him so he will be loaned a horse in Ireland, which makes competing a whole lot more difficult as he will only be given 3 days before the 1st event takes place to get to know the horse on which he will be competing. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Water and words - easy to pour, impossible to recover.

A WARM WELCOME.......
To all the new families who have joined the Felixton College family and to those who returned after the Christmas holiday.  We have had an exciting, smooth start to the school year and trust this has set the tone for the rest of 2010.

BEST MATRIC RESULTS EVER!

An ecstatic Mrs Badenhorst couldn't stop thanking Kuvee for his wonderful matric results! The class of 2009 recorded some of the best results in the school's history, with all but 2 qualifying to study a diploma or degree.  Kuveshan Padayache topped the class with 6 distinctions.  He was also in the top 1% of candidates in the country in Geography and Business Studies.
More detailed results will appear in next weeks' newsletter.

NEW DEPUTY HEAD TO CHAMPION THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

Felixton College is extremely excited to announce the appointment of Craig McIlrath into the position of Deputy Headmaster Primary School, with effect from the start of the second term 2010.

Craig is originally a Johannesburg lad, matriculating at Greenside High School.  Initially he completed an H.D.E. – Senior Primary at J.C.E. (Johannesburg College of Education) before completing a string of degrees culminating in an M.Ed degree, which included a pass “Cum Laude” in Educational Management.

He has 16 years teaching experience in various primary schools, his last post being Deputy Headmaster at Uplands Preparatory School in the Lowveld.

Craig has also coached, organized and run the entire gambit of school extra-curricular activities.

Craig is married to Vanessa, also an Educator, and they have two children, Kelsi (10) and
Duncan (6).

We look forward to embracing them as part of the Felixton Family.

CRICKET STAR!
Felixton College all-rounder Trevor Kietzmann travelled to Stellenbosch during the holidays for an inter-provincial tournament and has been selected to the SA Under 17 Country Districts Cricket Team. Well done Trevor - we are so proud of you!

DON'T MISS THE "GET TO KNOW YOUR GRADE CRICKET" on Friday

Cricket fever is high in South Africa at the moment with the Proteas having performed so well
against England.  Join us for a fun, family evening on Friday 22 January at 17:00 at The Dickson Oval for a social Cricket Festival.  The prime purpose of this function is to encourage new and existing parents to get to know each other.

Wors rolls, cold drinks and sweets will be on sale and braai fires will also be available should you wish to braai.   Please bring your own cutlery, crockery and camping chairs.

Please complete and return the reply slip that has been handed out, to your child’s Tutor Teacher by/on Wednesday 20 January.  We remind you that each team must comprise 7 adults and a minimum of 1 pupil.  In the case of more interested players, the players will be rotated to give everyone a chance to play. You will receive a slip confirming your team.

We look forward to a wonderful event.

OUR CHOIR MEETS CHARLIZE THERON
The Felixton College High School Choir posed with Charlize Theron after singing at a benifit performance for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project at a school outside Mtubatuba during the 1st week of the holidays.
